Don't be down on Down's!

World Down Syndrome Day is on 3/21 to represent the 3rd copy of the 21st chromosome

Today is 3/21.  Sounds just like any other day…but it’s definitely not.  Today is World Down’s Syndrome Day, the 8th anniversary of WDSD.

In October 2011 my childhood best friend went into labor with her first child, a son named Burke.  Just like all parents Olivia and her husband Keith were brimming with excitement to meet their lil man.  They had meticulously planned and prepared for his arrival and the day had finally arrived during Game 1 of the World Series.  That night Olivia checked into the hospital and all seemed completely fine and normal. After a whirlwind labor the proud parents welcomed the newest love of their lives.  Here is an excerpt from daddy, Keith’s blog:

Our son, Burke Logan Askin, was born on 10/20/11 at 5:01am. He weighed a healthy 6 lbs and 7 oz. He was 19 inches long. The doctor that pulled him out (he literally pulled him out with the vacuum) said he was a beautiful baby boy and looked good and healthy. NICU nurses were at the bedside, because Burke’s heart rate dropped a little too low each time mama pushed; thus the necessity of the vacuum. NICU nurses assessed him and they agreed he was a happy healthy baby. They were, however, a little concerned about his blood sugar levels and so they tested him twice. They prefer for the levels to be anywhere between 50 and 200. The first test was 49, the second 47. The NICU nurse told us she was taking him to the nursery to give him formula. Something about if it dropped too low, it’s harder to stabilize, etc. We were intent on nursing, so we were a little frustrated, but it didn’t seem like this was optional. Daddy went with him and Olivia’s parents stayed with her.

After running more tests, a shift change and LOTS of time Olivia and Keith were blindsided with news that would change the course of their lives forever:

The nurses attending to Olivia came in and told her we’d be making our way up to her recovery room and that they’d swing us by the NICU on the way to see little Burkester. Then 8:10 rolled around. 8:15…8:20…time was crawling and no one was coming to move us, tell us what was going on with Burke or anything. Finally, a neonatologist (Dr. Bennett) and a nurse practitioner showed up and started explaining his blood sugar and oxygen saturation situation. Both seemed pretty common, easy to get under control, just took time. Olivia was already in her wheelchair to be transported to her room. I was standing behind her rubbing her neck; it hurt from the labor/pushing process. After the blood sugar/oxygen explanation, Dr. Bennett said there was one more thing. Several markers gave them a pretty strong suspicion that Burke had Down Syndrome.
Since I was standing behind Olivia and rubbing her shoulders, I couldn’t tell what her reaction was. Then a tear drop hit my hand…another, then another…There I was confused all over again. This time the confusion had company: sadness, fear, anger. I tried my hardest to keep it together for Olivia, but my heart was breaking inside. What did this mean for my little guy? The guy I’d been dreaming of for nine months. In the matter of an hour, our worlds had turned upside down. The doctors and nurses gave us a moment to be alone and we wept together.

Olivia and Keith’s worlds was turned upside down that day and the word “normal” would now take on a new meaning for them.  The life they had envisioned was now different and the life they envisioned for Burke was nothing like they had imagined.  I have watched Olivia over the past year show a level of strength and courage that I have never known and one that I likely do not have.  She has dealt with emotions that she wishes no mother would ever have to deal with.  I have heard the pain in her words and heard her speak of her sadness, fears and anxieties. And through it all she has been very raw and honest with her feelings.  I have always admired my dear friend but since Burke’s birth I have grown to admire her even more.  One of the main reasons I so admire Olivia is that even though she, Keith and Burke are faced with some adversity she has channeled that adversity into a fight for DS research.  And while there is no “cure” for DS she is determined to help the progress of research.
Momma's boy.

Proud Poppa.

That’s where World Down’s Syndrome Day comes in.  This particular day is, of course, dedicated to global awareness of DS.  The organization encourages people all over the world to help raise awareness of what DS is, what it means to have DS, and how people with DS play a vital role in our lives and communities.  This is a day of awareness and celebration!  In typical Olivia style she has poured her heart and mind into supporting DS research and educating herself on any type of study, trial, etc.  In fact she just shared some amazing news with me about two drug trials (one in the US and the other that just started in Australia) that have had staggering results in terms of what they could do for cognition in people with DS.  Here are her words regarding the drug trials:

If the drugs are as effective as the researchers believe (based on the mice trials), he may able to learn and comprehend at the same level as his peers! You can't "cure" Down syndrome obviously but these drugs may mean that more people with Down syndrome are able function independently and to possibly decrease the odds of Alzheimer's (it's thought that if a person with Ds lives long enough, the will ALWAYS get Alzheimer's with symptoms starting as early as 40!).
I can honestly say that if they can give Burke a drug that would enable him to learn the same way as his peers, my fear about his future will be gone! I don't need him to go to college or make $50K a year, I need him to be able to function as a grown man and have a life that I dreamed of for him when I was pregnant. Some people with Ds are able to do that without pharmacology but many are not.
I just had to include this picture.  A mother's love...nothing like it!

So today, I ask my mommy friends to show your support.  Whether you repost this on your Facebook page, forward this blog post to friends, visit the sites I have included or donate to the cause we would love your support.  And because today, 3/21 is World Down’s Syndrome Day there are some great partners matching donations 3:1!

Now the fun part…how can you join the cause and help?  Well it’s super easy.  You can either visit the Down’s Syndrome Research and Treatment Foundation (DSTRF),Olivia’s favorite group dedicated to furthering cognition in people with DS, to make a donation OR if you want to help and purchase a treat for your lil one you can do so by visiting Discovery Toys, a partner site (awesome toys focused on improving your child’s development).  This Discovery Toys rep will donate 21% of her sales to DSRTF and for all sales on March 21st and her donation will also be matched 3:1!

Sweet Burke...time to celebrate you on 3/21!

I hope you will join in spreading awareness and supporting this cause.  Here are a few photos of Olivia, Keith and Burke as well as one last note from Olivia.

Even with the shock and sadness of a diagnosis of Down Syndrome, we are happy. Sure we have rough days but are they any more rough than a parent would have with a "typical" child?  Burke is funny and adorable and brings us an amazing amount of joy that we could never have imagined!  And he's probably the easiest baby on the planet.  Hellooo, my kid slept through the night from birth (if we let him!). Down Syndrome comes with some scary statistics and potential health issues but there are so many positives that come along with it too.
That smile never gets old, heartbreaker!

Such a beautiful family!  Love how hard Burke is laughing in this one!

Looking for kisses from daddy.

And for more information on DS you can visit the National Down’s SyndromeSociety or Keith’s blog (he’s a fab writer and will definitely keep you entertained).  Olivia has even offered to answer any questions via email (please post if you would like me to send you her email address).  We would love to see your support via comments to this post too!  If we get just ONE repost or donation than we have made a difference!

Thank you and happy World Down’s Syndrome Day!!!

Going Clean...

Happy Monday Mommies!!!!

It’s starting to really feel like Spring here in Houston.  This weekend we had the most amazing weather…it actually bordered on hot on Sunday (you would think that after living in Texas over 25 years I would be used to the heat, but alas I am not).  Our lil family spent the majority of the weekend outdoors which is one of our favorite things….during the SPRING…not the summer, lol.  We are blessed to have a daughter who loves being outdoors more than she does indoors (not such a blessing during one of Houston’s rainy 7 day stretches).  There is something about the Spring time that just puts everyone in such a good mood.  Spring is definitely the season of rebirth….from exercising outdoors to eating healthier because so many fruits and veggies are in season, Spring just feels healthier which leads me to my topic today.

About 5 months before I got married I decided to start a “clean” diet…AKA eating organic foods only.  My reason’s were two fold; 1) I wanted to get into the best shape possible for my wedding and be in tip top health and 2) I had done a lot of research that organic eating can sometimes ease allergies. The thought of doing this seemed simple enough but I quickly found out that it proved more difficult than I originally thought.  It was necessarily difficult to make clean choices but rather find a good variety of organic foods.

A quick lesson on organic foods.  Before any food item can honestly call itself organic food, it has to meet standards set by the U.S. Department of Agriculture -- only then can it wear the coveted green and white USDA Organic label. What makes organic food different is the way it's grown and produced. For example, only fertilizers like compost or manure can be used; chemical fertilizers are out, as are most synthetic herbicides, pesticides and antibiotics. Animals must be raised on organic feed and have access to the outdoors.  In short, organic food is just that…organic, from the earth as is.  For more on organic foods and USDA labeling regulations click here.

Now before everyone gets in a tizzy over this post please keep in mind that I don’t claim to be an organic food expert and I do understand that although there are strict labeling requirements I also know that there is some wiggle room with regard to labeling (certain foods can still wear the USDA Certified Organic label even though 5% of their ingredients are not organic).  As much as I try I do not eat organic all the time and don’t worry, I will not judge you if you eat non-organic---that would just be ridiculous!  And yes, I still indulge in processed foods every now and then (I’m sorry but Mac n Cheese, frozen pizzas and french fries are needed upon occasion).  And now back to our regularly scheduled program.

I chose to try and eat mostly organic again after choosing to do so the first time proved to be very successful.  I felt great while on my clean diet!  My energy levels were much higher, I felt healthier and most importantly I noticed a HUGE change in my allergies and acid reflux.  In fact I was able to take myself off almost all my allergy meds and completely off my acid reflux meds.  When I became pregnant I decided to do this again.  Although, due to certain pregnancy cravings I wasn’t always able to maintain my completely organic diet (sorry but I had major Mac N Cheese cravings the first 6 weeks).  This time around I wanted to continue with my organic diet and carry it into my daughter’s diet.

In order to shop for organic foods I found myself having to shop at the grocery store and local farmer’s markets.  Unfortunately, my neighborhood grocery store does not carry a large variety of organic foods and my local farmer’s market is quite small which means little variety.  Being a working mom with a small business on the side I simply do not have the time to do all of this shopping.  Which is why I have come to LOVE a company that focuses on delivery groceries to your home.  Even better than the delivery is that these groceries are organic.  Even better than that?  The delivery is FREE!  I introduce to you Greenling.

Greenling is my  new favorite discovery.  I first heard about Greenling via a Facebook ad (very good behavioral marketing FB---that’s my marketing nerd coming out).  As soon as I clicked on the ad I was hooked.  Greenling takes the leg work out of organic shopping by working with local farmers (I LOVE that they support local farmers) to bring the best, most nutritious, beautiful organic fruits, veggies, meats, dairy and more right to your front door.  Ordering is a cinch!  Simply visit their site, enter your zip code to verify delivery to your area and begin shopping.  The concept is similar to that of a grocery store; just fill your cart with items you wish to purchase.  Greenling makes it even easier by offering prepared boxes featured weekly known as a Local Box.  They also offer boxes with all the ingredients for recipes they provide.  The minimum order is $25 + a $10 refundable deposit for your box.  And for those of you who like to support Green friendly businesses, Greenling is also…Green.

Delivery day is like Christmas morning!  So exciting to open my box and see all the delish produce!
Just a sample of my order.  Total was $26 with a Retail Me Not coupon code and including a $5 driver tip.

Greenling has made my life a lil easier.  I now order my produce and some other items from Greenling and then go to the grocery store for anything else I need.  Now 2-3 trips is down to 1 and the quality of my food is much better!  I love that we are supporting local farmers, an entrepreneur with a dream AND eating healthier all at one time while giving me more time with my precious Sofia Grace.

I decided to start documenting some of my cooking creations with my Greenling purchases.  Click Here to view the recipe for my first creation, Turkey Lettuce Wraps.

PS…If you are interested in trying Greenling look up coupon codes on Retail Me Not and Groupon features specials every so often as well.

Enjoy!!!

Hello Jenkins, Lissette,

How did the time change go for you? As usual, the day of the time change goes nicely (kids "slept in" until 7:30 a.m. woohoo!), but then I was dragging the next day when I had to wake up at "6:00 a.m." to get the kids ready for school. If you woke your baby or toddler, you might find that he is a little sluggish or over-tired, too, so keep that in mind when you set bedtimes this week. We have far more parents worry about the Fall time change, but if your baby or toddler struggles through this one, too, you are not alone! Some children are thrown off by schedule changes such as these. Hang in there!

I hope reading through our weekly newsletter will help you realize that you are not alone in your sleep struggles, that there is hope, and a light at the end of the tunnel. Take a look below and let us know what you think.

Until next week,

7 Sure Signs It's Time to Sleep Train

My boys are now 5 and 7 years old, yet they still keep me grounded and remind me of the sleep deprivation many of you go through every single day. Whether it's a nightmare, temperature changes and wild fluctuations (it's been a crazy year weather-wise, hasn't it?), or illness, each of them has an issue crop up, sometimes. And, with two, there is double the chance something will happen (the nights when both get up are brutal!). After one of these such nights, sometimes I think I have some form of PTSD, because it sends me right back to that feeling of "Oh no! Not again! When am I going to be able to sleep? I am so tired of feeling tired! Woe is me." And, then I talk to parents and remember that I have been given the "gift" of imperfect sleepers to be here for you and I must never forget "this" feeling. Of course, teaching my boys healthy sle ep habits does help keep our sleep problems in check. So, as I was laying in my bed unable to sleep after my little one woke me up over the weekend (he, of course, went right back to sleep!), I came up with these 7 sure signs it's time to sleep train (and there are probably more):
1.      Your baby has red-rimmed eyes or bags under her eyes.
2.      Your baby is unhappy most of the day.
3.      You are unhappy most of the day. Let's face it, a happy mommy or daddy is much more on top of it and a lot more fun!
4.      You feel like you may be suffering from PPD.
5.      You are beginning to resent your baby or feel like a prisoner in your home.
6.      You can't go one. more. day. like. this. (aka you're at the end of your rope (or tether for International parents)).
7.      You have confidence your baby can do this, if only he would or you could teach him.
And, remember, have confidence in your baby that she can do this, so she can gain self-confidence in herself. Now, go to it!

Parent Reflections

There are so many sleep training methods out there to choose from that it's no wonder that we talk to parents all the time who don't exactly know where to go next. Meet Lissette, who started down the path of Babywise (minus the cry it out) and tried some Baby Sleep Solution, but still needed some help and support. We gladly obliged, of course, and here's what she has to say:

"Hi Nicole & Staff,
I just wanted to send a quick update to let you know that we are on Night 5 of our Personalized Sleep Plan. The first night Sofia Grace took 20 minutes to fall asleep and only woke up twice for her pacifier (much better than the 5+ times). The second night she fell asleep in 9 minutes and only woke up once for her pacifier and the third night she fell asleep in 5 minutes and didn't wake up for her paci. Last night was night four and she fell asleep in 4 minutes and didn't wake up for her paci! Night four also meant no rocking to sleep or paci after middle of night feeding and she did great last night...fell right asleep on her own! We are making AMAZING progress thanks to you! We are sticking to the plan and this is the most sleep we have had since our sweet was born!

I also have a Mommy Blog and would love to mention you and your services if this would be okay?

Thank you Baby Sleep Site! I will keep you updated with our progress!"
